Styling a bookcase

When styling your space, layering your pieces is key. This process takes time and experimentation, so don't be discouraged if some items don’t work out. The goal is to play with textures and integrate your accent colors to achieve a harmonious look.

5 Important things to include in your bookshelf styling:

  1. Plants - I always use plants to add color and texture to a space, and they're perfect for filling empty spots and bringing life to a bookshelf. If you struggle with keeping plants alive, don't worry—faux plants are a great alternative! Opt for ones with drooping leaves or cascading vines, as they tend to look more realistic and add the lush, full effect of real plants without maintenance.

2. Books

Books are an effortless styling tool that adds versatility to any design. Whether you’re looking to create height, fill space, or make a statement, books can adapt to suit your desired look and serve as a perfect centerpiece or subtle accent.

Some different ways to use these:

Rainbow

If you’re a fan of The Home Edit and love reading, try organizing your books by color. Arranging them in rainbow order creates a cohesive, vibrant display, turning your book collection into a stunning wall of art.

Vintage books

A great find at flea markets (brocantes in France) or local thrift shops. With countless books donated or discarded each year, rescuing a few for your shelves is both sustainable and stylish. The embossed bindings and craftsmanship of vintage books add character, but if the colors don’t suit your decor, just turn them around to display the worn pages instead. I’ve styled many of mine this way, transforming mismatched blues and reds into a cohesive, textured look. Mixing and matching how you stack them adds even more depth to your space.

A great solution for achieving a specific, clean, modern design without the cost of real books. Available in various colors and sizes on Amazon, they’re easy to assemble and perfect for maintaining a cohesive look and filling space. However, they aren't sturdy enough for heavier items like vases or plants. Despite this, they add charm and keep your design seamless and stylish.

3. Pottery

I’m always on the hunt for unique vases and pottery, often picking up pieces during my travels. While these souvenirs are wonderful, they're not always practical to transport. Fortunately, you can find great, affordable options on Amazon to complement your collection. For a cohesive look, keep your colors consistent and vary the shapes of your pieces to add visual interest.

4. Artwork

Layering artwork on your shelves adds depth and dimension, especially on taller shelves where art can act as a backdrop. Place other items in front to create a layered look. To elevate your decor, choose art that complements the style of your space, ensuring a cohesive and polished finish.

5. Candles & Lighting

While I adore a stunning chandelier or statement light fixture, if it’s not dimmable, it’s a no-go in my home. Instead, I rely on candles, lamps, and mood lighting throughout the house. I love placing mini lamps in the kitchen, on bookshelves, and in cozy corners—they add a romantic touch and bring a soft, inviting glow to the space.

This little lamp is perfect for a bookshelf if you don’t have access to a wall plug. It’s rechargeable and has three different light settings.

This candle warmer is the perfect addition to your bookcase, allowing you to enjoy a candle without the worry of smoke. Simply place your candle inside, and the warmer provides a cozy ambiance without the need for an open flame.
