Adapting American DIY Design Ideas for European Homes

Designing for You

Design trends come and go, but what truly makes a home yours? For some, it’s recreating the feeling of safety from childhood; for others, it’s crafting a unique space that reflects their journey. Whether it's special items from overseas, cherished family photos, or inspiration from your backyard, it’s uniquely you.

Personally, I want my home to feel safe, inspired, and inviting. Growing up, my home was like a giant hug, filled with warmth and creativity from my parents and grandparents. Friends loved spending time at our house, and I cherished hosting sleepovers. Surrounded by creative adults, I was encouraged to make my own design choices.

Having lived outside the U.S. for eight years, making my space uniquely mine has always been a priority, even with frequent moves. My design style evolves with my surroundings while staying true to what home means to me.

Living in France

Living in France has introduced me to new design elements, such as creatively utilizing small spaces and appreciating old-world pieces. The slower pace and limited online marketplace options have taught me patience and resourcefulness in finding and creating the perfect pieces for my home.

Finding Great Pieces in Europe

The online marketplace in Europe is different. Without endless options at my fingertips, I don’t always get things done quickly. Communicating my needs in stores can also be a challenge. English videos and blogs often recommend products available only in the U.S. or UK, which isn’t helpful in France.

Now, I’m on a mission to help you find great pieces in Europe! Need US paint recommendations? Let’s find the European equivalents! US Amazon finds? Let’s locate them in Europe without import taxes and long waits. How to mix brocante finds with items from Sklum?
